Let there be Peace

Parshat Korach and the month of Tammuz Parshas Korach - VeAharon Ma Hu Last week we read the story of the spies. The spies came back and they said Israel is a terrible country, it’s terrible, let’s not go there. This Shabbos we read Korach, a very holy man. He comes to Moshe and Aaron and says, “I deserve to be the High Priest." I want to share something very fast with you. I want you to know, I have two friends: there’s one friend, whenever I do something wrong, this friend is so beautiful, he points it out to me right away. Unbelievable friend, I make a mistake and he puts it right on my plate. A good friend, right. Are you looking for that kind of a friend? I’m not. I’ll tell you, I have

Wear our Tzitzis with humble pride

General Joe Klein: A Reb Shlomo Story This is a story which I heard from Reb Shlomo zt"l, which he heard many times from his father Reb Naftali Carlebach zt"l. "This General Klein looks like that wild boy I used to teach back in Vienna, I wonder if it is he." After the morning services were over Rabbi Naftali Carlebach zt"l, Reb Shlomo's father, was looking at the NY Times while having a cup of coffee. There on the front page was a picture of General McArthur and next to him were some of the generals who worked with him. One of them, Joe Klein, was McArthur's top assistant. The announcement said that a WWII victory parade was going to be held later that morning and that General McArthur and

Every Jew is the holy of Holies

A story from my family My elderly father (may he live to 120) went in the late 1980s to Tbilisi, Georgia. I'm not referring to the state of Georgia here in the southern U.S., but rather the country of Georgia which is located in Eurasia sandwiched right between between Russia, Turkey and Armenia. He went there to help a jewish woman get divorced, so that she would be able to remarry. While in Tbilisi, my father asked the local jewish man who was assigned to help him translate for the couple getting divorced if there was a synagogue that he could go to, to pray for Mincha, the afternoon prayer service. The man said of course, and he was happy to take my father to the large synagogue in Tbilis

Behaalotcha - True Leadership

Beautiful Reb Shlomo Carlebach teaching on Behaalotcha In Parshat Behaalotcha - Hashem instructs Aharon the High Priest on the proper way to light the Menorah in the Mishkan, the makeshift temple in the desert. The parsha starts off with the word "Bahaalotcha" which roughly means when you make the lights of the Menorah "rise up". Rashi points out that the Torah could have simply said "when you kindle the lights of the Menorah" instead of the strange wording "when you make the lights RISE UP". Rashi says from here we learn that when the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) lights the candles of the Menorah he should do it in a way that the flame of the candle should "rise up" by itself. (כתוב בהדלקתן לש

Connecting deeply with Eretz Yisrael

Everybody asks, why did G-d forgive us for the sin of the Golden Calf and didn't He forgive us for the sin of the spies? In this blog, collected from the teachings of Reb Shlomo who makes a passionate case in favour of Eretz Yisrael and Israel , and there is a story and a moving video of Reb Shlomo visiting the injured soldiers at Hadassah Hospital after the Yom Kippur War in 1973. Everybody knows that Eretz Yisrael has all kinds of Kedushot (holinesses), First of all, it has kedushat avoth (holiness of our ancestors), Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov, G-d gave them the land. Then there is the kedusha of Clal Yisrael, of all Israel. And then, Eretz Yisrael itself is holy, The Midrash says some

The Soul of Shavuot

“Celebrating Shavuos with Reb Shlomo was not only immensely inspirational for me because he would relate beautiful teachings on the deeper content of receiving the Torah but he also offered a taste of its transcendental experience. Through teachings, singing, dancing, davening and storytelling Reb Shlomo sought to recreate not just the meaning of Mt Sinai but it’s spirit as well. Truth be said in almost any Reb Shlomo learning or Shabbat experience all these elements were present. Indeed the Chidushei Harim the first Gurer Rebbe said that Matan Torah the giving of the Torah was a one time occurence but Kabbalat Hatorah the receiving of the Torah is part of a daily ongoing process. So channel
